I have been reading The Hidden Message of the Great Seal How Foundational Truth From The Dawn Of Liberty May Rescue A Republic In Peril from The Hidden Message, LLC.  I am very much enjoying it!!!  We spend a lot of time learning American History.  In the past few years we have done both the elementary and middle school levels.  This book would be a great addition to our high school American History.  When we get there in a few years I will definitely be putting this book in the mix.
Author, Michael Kanis spent many, many hours researching and writing this book to share what The Great Seal of The United States means.  While a book about only that would be fascinating, Mr Kanis takes you back to the days of the founding fathers.  He walks you through their daily lives and personally shows you what life was like then and the character these key figures had during the beginnings of our great nation.
This book is 256 pages.  I really didn’t expect this book to be this big.  I was thinking I would be receiving some light reading to keep me occupied during my self isolation.  I was interested in what the symbols meant since all I knew was that it was a mystery and had something to do with the Freemasons.  Wow!  I was expecting something totally different that what I received. The mystery is explained and the Freemasons are taken out of it.  It brings God back to the center where He was when the Great Seal came to be.   This book is big and heavy like a text book.  High quality paper, big beautiful pictures and anything but light reading!
There are 24 chapters packed with so much information.  I think when we pull the book out again for high school history I will assign one chapter at a time and spend time to really take all the info in.  This is not a book to rush through for quick answers.  It is amazingly rich with how we came to be and who made it that way.  This book is eloquently written with high level vocabulary.  In truth, that did slow me down a little.  I’m a slow reader, but appreciated the challenge of some words we don’t hear everyday.  Along with the history lesson, I could pull some great words out for further study and pronunciation.
The book begins with some background information before you get to what the seal stands for.  You learn about the people involved and the events leading up to The First Continental Congress.  Did you know that three men who wrote the Declaration of Independence were given the task of creating this seal? Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams accepted the challenge to design the seal.  These men would most certainly do it justice since they were so intimately involved in the birth of our nation.
Did you know that this seal was made to be like a king’s seal?  “The seal carried the image and identity of the sovereign and conveyed authority, credibility, and legitimacy.”  These images we have today were not random images to be used on our money and other things.  Great care was taken to create symbols that would carry the true feeling from that time into our time now.  These were meant to last and be carried on because that’s what we were founded on and founded to be.
I could go on and on, because there is just so much in here.  If you are interested in American History, you’d love this.  Take your time and take it all in.  If you are teaching high school American History, I think this would be a great addition.
