R.E.A.D. Curriculum Notebook Review

Evie been using the Learn to R.E.A.D. Curriculum Notebook and R.E.A.D. Review Pack from The Crafty Classroom.  She is about 6 1/2 now and is about to start first grade.  She is a very hands on kind of girl and loves to make projects.  She can listen to books or do worksheets, but only for so long.  If we haven’t crafted anything during our school time, she doesn’t think we have done “school”.

We have had the opportunity to try many “learn to read” and phonics programs over the years, but I think this one was made just for Evie!!!  She loves it and loves to do her school work!  She felt she was reading from the first lesson and she gets to craft each day with what she’s learning.

The R.E.A.D Curriculum Notebook ($25.00) is a PDF ebook that I was easily able to download and begin printing.  There is an assessment and daily warm-ups.  Each day’s lesson is about 20 pages and is completed in a four day week.  The first week was “am” words, the sight words “I” and “a” and learning what a noun is.  That’s a lot for one week at least at our house, but she mastered it, proudly shared it with her Daddy and was ready to start week two.  Week two is “at” words, the sight words “my” and “is” and learning about pronouns.  Week three is “ab” words, the sight words “and” and “the” and learning about verbs.  Week four is “ag” words, the sight words “we” and “can” and learning about adjectives.

Two days a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) we work in her notebook.  We found a pretty composition notebook and glue her work in there.  She loves that this is together, she’s crafting and I love she’s learning to read and recognize parts of speech!

After four weeks of lessons you use the R.E.A.D Review Pack ($15.00) for one week.  These work with blends.  Week five is “fl”, “gl”, “sl” and “bl”. There are about 8 activities included for this week. This could be used as a stand alone review if desired.

This curriculum is labeled for Kindergarten/First Grade, I think this is a great language arts, reading and phonics curriculum for Evie.  It meets her learning style.  She already knew the letters of the alphabet and their sounds.  I glanced at The Crafty Classroom’s other products and they seem to have more great things for children who are learning letters and sounds.  They have a Bible ABC Curriculum Notebook and Alphabet Curriculum Notebook for younger students and they have other products for older kids, USA Activity Bundle and How to Write a Paragraph. They even have math and science!  I will definitely keep The Crafty Classroom on my radar as she gets older.  Don’t miss the banner at the bottom of this review.  When you click on that you can see more products reviewed by The Homeschool Review Crew and what they thought of them.

There is a lot of printing for this program, but I didn’t mind it.  I printed a week of worksheets at a time and put in a three ring binder.  Since there were five worksheets per day sometimes Evie didn’t get through them all before she lost interest.  I just stopped for the day and that’s were we started the next day.  This is a full 36 week curriculum and it may take us a little longer, but I’m ok with that.  One thing I did learn is if I prep the hands on activities by cutting them prior to her starting her lesson she was able to get right through everything without burning out.
