If He Had Not Come: Book Review

I had the opportunity to review a heart warming children’s Christmas book called If He had Not ComeDavid Nicholson has reintroduced this charming story to a new generation. Many years ago he heard this story by Nan Weeks in his adult Sunday School class.  It was originally published in 1938.  From the time Mr. Nicholson heard the story, he knew he wanted to share it with his family each year at Christmas. It has been almost 30 years since he first heard it, and now he’s sharing it with us!

This beautifully illustrated, 40 page, hard cover book, is a very thought provoking look at how different our lives would be if Jesus never came. The story begins with a little boy getting ready for bed on Christmas Eve.  He and his father read a passage in the Bible from John 15.  Verse 22 says “If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.” The beginning of that verse “If I had not come” stuck with the boy as he went off to bed. He was excited to get to sleep and wake up Christmas morning to all his presents.

He thought he was waking up to all his normal Christmas traditions, but there was nothing!  No Christmas tree, no gifts, no Christmas breakfast.  He took a walk around town to find businesses open and they said it wasn’t Christmas.  No one knew what he was talking about when he asked about Christmas.  He went to find his church and it wasn’t there, he tried to find the homeless shelter but it wasn’t there either.  No one was nice to him and no one would help him.  There was no Christmas, no kindness and no helpfulness. He just kept finding signs that said “If I had not come”.

He woke up to realize that it was all a dream and this little boy was so grateful!!!  He prayed and thanked God for Jesus.  He realized that Jesus was the BEST Christmas gift he could have received and committed to live for Him.

The back of the book has “Interactive Topics for Families and Sunday School Teachers”, “Going Deeper”, a page about salvation, and some ideas to help you celebrate Christmas.  These pages are a great addition to the story.  We went through them and had some great discussions.

This book is recommend for children ages 6 and up.  I read it with my 3 1/2 year old and she LOVED it!  She asked for me to read it again!  I was very surprised how much of it she really understood. My older kids did understand it much deeper and we were able to use the discussion section in the back of the book with them.

This book has a great message and I enjoyed it as much as my kids did.  I liked that the book was set many years ago, when kids could walk around town with few worries.  I also liked that the boy mentioned Woolworths in the story.  I have to admit it did make me feel a little old, but that’s ok.  It brought back very fond memories of what I remember of the five and dime stores and what my mom would tell me about them.

If He Had Not Come is available as a Casebound Hardcover for $18.95 and an ebook for $3.99.
