Growing Up Wild Review

This is another product I was jumping up and down to review!!!   Growing Up Wild sent me volume 1 and volume 4 of their Dvd/Cd series teaching others about their life as missionaries in Papua, Indonesia.  Their last name is Wild and they share the adventures of the four “Wild Brothers” growing up in the most interesting setting!!!

These lessons are targeted for ages 5-12.  Allie (13), David (6) and I watched and enjoyed them!  We love to hear missionaries speak, so we couldn’t wait to hear about this family’s life!  What a neat family that is seeking to honor Christ in all that they do and say!

Volume One includes:

  • Home Sweet Hut- which describes in detail their house
  • Supply Trip- this shows how they get supplies such as food to their hut
  • Sun and Water- they share how they use the solar energy

This one we actually watched more that one time.  We found many things very interesting.  One was their hut and how they were able to have some of the modern conveniences that they enjoyed, like a hot shower.  They also described how they order and received their supplies.  They have to make sure they order enough until they can get another order, but they also have to keep in mind wight restrictions with the helicopter that brings their supplies to them.

The DVDs come with activity CDs!  The activities are also described on the DVD at the end.  I loved having the CD also to print the activities and to have a lesson on paper.  We did some of the activities that went along with volume 1.

Here is David constructing a house like the one he saw on the video.  We learned about how it was built and how they chose that site.  We also learned about how the Wild family gets modern conveniences like hot water and electricity.

Here are the drawings that David made before he started building the house.

One of the suggested activities was to compare and contrast their house to our own.  Allie made this drawing to show how our houses are alike and different.  The activity suggested a Venn diagram, but Allie wanted to draw it.  I think it came out pretty good.

Volume Four:

  • Amazing world around us
  • Adventures in culture
  • Tribal Calling

The Wild Family certainly has a heart for the people of Papua! You can see how they enjoy being with these people and sharing Jesus with them!

Each of the volumes are $18.99 + S/H.  The  5 DVD Series can be purchased at a 15% discount for $80.99 + S/H.  I think this is a great resource!  Each of these volumes could easily be expanded as a unit study easily including geography, Bible, math, writing, etc.  These could also be shared with other groups like church youth groups and co-ops.
