Math 911 Review

There are certain family members here that love math and some that hate it!  We also have many different learning styles!  We love to try new math things!  I was excited to be given the opportunity to review Math 911.  Math 911 is a computer math program developed by Professor Martin Weissman.  He  has been teaching Mathematics for 48 years.  Professor Weissman created this program for mastery.  Incorrect problems are not marked wrong, after the required amount of right answers the student can move to the next level.

There are many different levels Introductory Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Statistics, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus.  We used the Introductory Algebra.  The set up took a little getting used to.  We were waiting for a big, boring lesson that we wouldn’t understand.  What we did get was a problem with minimal directions.  I wasn’t sure what to think of this.  We followed the directions and answered the problem.  After pushing enter, we found out if we got it right.  A green check mark for right answers and if we didn’t get it, we were shown the correct answer.  There is a button to push to show the solution step by step.  It was very motivating to move to the next level!

From the Math 911 website:

With a Mastery Learning approach your students are never graded for wrong answers, only correct responses; they work at problems until they ‘get it.’

Topics are arranged by chapter, section and levels. Within each level are all the types of problems that identify the concepts that your students must know in order to be successful in Algebra including Graphs and Word Problems.

  • All problems are algorithmically generated.
  • 10 minute learning curve.
  • Step by Step solutions.
  • Only Free-form answers.
  • Dynamic Grade reports on all screens.
  • Needs no internet connection.
  • Can be networked.
  • Free Home Use For Teachers
  • Free Upgrades
  • Free Install on New PCs

We did like the simplicity of the program.  We are going to use this as our start to algebra this year.  I plan on using it as a stand alone curriculum for now and see if reinforcement will be needed.  I will be using the free PDF downloads with explanations that go with this level.

Math 911 is recommended for age 12 and up.  The complete program is $49.95 it includes all subjects listed above.    A  free download of just the Introductory Algebra course is available from the website.  A  back-to-school offer for the “Algebra In A Flash” flash drive version is available for $9.95 for a LIMITED time.

Others on the TOS Crew reviewed Math 911 using this and other levels.  Click here to see what they had to say.
